Dr. Hisham Arafat holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from 1985, a Master’s degree in 1991, and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering in 1998, from the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, Cairo.
Dr. Hesham Arafat assumed the position of Head of the Structural Engineering and Construction Management Department at the Future University in Egypt from 2008 until 2016. Dr. Arafat is a member of the International Association for Bridges and Structural Engineering (IABSE) and a member of the scientific committee since 2009.
Dr. Arafat has published more than 42 research papers in international journals and conferences focusing on geotechnical studies, construction management, asset management, risk assessment, and structural issues related to bridges, tunnels, and infrastructure. He also supervised 23 master’s and doctoral dissertations related to these topics.
Dr. Arafat held the position of Minister of Transport in the Arab Republic of Egypt from February 2017 to March 2019, where he contributed to the development of all strategic plans for the restructuring of railways, subway lines, seaports, dry ports, river transport, and highways, and he initiated the implementation of electric traction projects for mass transportation.
Dr. Arafat has 38 years of experience in designing infrastructure for infrastructure projects, especially bridges and tunnels. He also has extensive experience in conducting and supervising geotechnical studies and soil research for more than 1,000 projects in Egypt.
Dr. Hisham Arafat is currently the non-executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Medbank and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Future. He is also a member of the Higher Advisory Committee of the Engineers Syndicate.
